BUCKS COUNCIL ENDORSE THE RELIABILITY OF THE EX ELECTRIC STEPS
In 2007 AVS Steps launched the EX Series to address the market need for a robust powered step that could deliver the reliability expected of modern passenger transport vehicles. Prior to the development of the EX range, the market had been firmly split over its preference of choosing electrically operated or manually operated steps, with those in the latter camp having the perception that electrical steps are less reliable than manual alternatives. AVS set out to dispel these myths by developing the EX Series.
Twelve months on, and the EX Series which features a new heavy duty twin-armed motor that can deliver seven times the power of a standard electric step, has been chosen by Mercedes-Benz as its factory fitted product of choice for Sprinter Minibuses, and is being specified by coach builders from all over the world. Buckinghamshire County Council also fitted AVS's EX steps on its new fleet of LDV MAXUS minibuses last year, to provide additional safe access to passengers entering the vehicle from the side door. Graham Groom, the Fleet Manager at Buckinghamshire County Council explains why:
"The LDV MAXUS Minibus comes fitted with a 600mm kick out step. For some passengers to gain access past the front row of seats this kick out step did not provide the full tread width needed to enable a safe and easy entry or exit. To overcome this, the Council specified AVS's EX electric cassette step in a 1000mm width, which solved the issue because not only did it give the full door aperture access it could also be fitted unobtrusively underneath the vehicle without any restrictions.
"We chose electric steps, over manual steps, because we deem it important that the driver is in full control of the step - fundamentally he/she knows that it has been safely deployed and stowed. We specified the EX step, which had only just been launched by AVS, because it was by far the most powerful and robust electric step available, and came with a standard two year warranty and an option for a third year which we opted for. Since installing the EX steps we have not had one problem or any complaints from our passengers, drivers, the maintenance team or our servicing agents, which for me speaks volumes. From our experiences, AVS Steps has so far lived up to their claim of launching the most reliable electric step on the market."
Keith Clarke, AVS Steps Managing Director said: “We would go as far to say that the EX range is more reliable than any other electric or manual step currently available on the market.”
The EX Series
The EX range of slide-in slide-out cassette steps are available in four sizes with tread widths ranging from 600 to 1200mm (the larger steps comfortably accommodating two adults). They have an aluminium tread assembly which is enclosed in a 2mm thick galvanised steel case. They are self-cleaning and suitable for all commercial and private passenger uses including mini-buses, ambulances, utility vehicles, transit vans, school buses, etc., and can be fitted to hinged, sliding and power operated doors.
AVS has also designed additional safety features in the EX range, including full automatic working option, automatic step closure when the door shuts, and an optional touch sensitive strip which detects any contact with objects and automatically cuts the motor. Unlike competitive models, the strip works on an independent circuit and is unaffected by adverse step conditions such as mud. Further options include an illuminated front edge.
Self-installation of the EX step range is also straightforward with fitting kits available for most popular vehicles which include instructions, wiring plans with free online support. AVS also provides a unique onsite step fitting and warranty service across the UK through a network of accredited service agents.
